About the Rotate & Flip Image
Rotate & Flip Image turns a picture by 90° or 180°, or mirrors it horizontally or vertically. It is handy for photos that show up sideways, scans that are upside down, or when you need a mirrored version of a selfie or a design.
Operations can be combined – for example rotate right and then flip – and the preview updates immediately, together with the resulting width and height. When you save, the full-resolution image is drawn once with the final orientation, so repeated clicks do not degrade it.
Everything happens in your browser; the image is not uploaded.
How to use it
- Click "Choose an image", drop a file onto the box or paste an image.
- Click "Rotate left", "Rotate right" or "Rotate 180°" until the picture is the right way up.
- Click "Flip horizontal" or "Flip vertical" to mirror it. Reset undoes all changes.
- Check the preview and the result size – a quarter turn swaps width and height.
- Choose the output format and quality, click "Save image", then click Download.
Features
- Rotate in 90° steps: Turn the image 90° counter-clockwise, 90° clockwise or 180°. Quarter turns map pixels exactly, so the rotation itself loses no detail.
- Mirror horizontally or vertically: Flip the picture left to right or top to bottom, for example to correct a mirrored selfie.
- Combined operations: Any sequence of rotations and flips is reduced to one of the eight possible orientations and applied in a single step when you save.
- Live preview: See the result immediately, with the new dimensions and a plain-language description such as "Rotated 90° clockwise".
- Output format choice: Keep the original format or save as JPG, PNG or WebP, with a quality setting for JPG and WebP.
Examples
A sideways phone photo
A photo looks fine on your phone but appears sideways in an older program or an upload form. Open it here, click "Rotate right" if needed, and save it: the pixels themselves are now upright, so it displays correctly everywhere.
Mirrored selfie
Front cameras often save selfies mirrored, so text on a T-shirt or sign reads backwards. Click "Flip horizontal" and save the corrected version.
Upside-down scan
A page was scanned upside down. Click "Rotate 180°" and save as PNG to keep the text crisp, or as JPG for a smaller file.
Limitations and notes
- Only 90° steps are supported; rotating by a free angle, for example to straighten a horizon, is not possible.
- Rotating a JPG is not lossless here: the image is decoded and compressed again. At quality 90–95 the extra loss is very hard to see; PNG output avoids it but creates larger files.
- EXIF metadata such as camera details and GPS location is removed, and colour profiles may be converted to sRGB. The orientation stored in EXIF is applied when the image is opened, so the saved file shows the same orientation everywhere.
- With "Same as original", GIF, BMP and AVIF files are saved as PNG. Animated images keep only their first frame, and WebP output is not available in browsers that cannot create WebP, such as Safari.
- Files can be up to 50 MB and 50 megapixels; phones may run out of memory with very large images.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my photo upright on my phone but sideways elsewhere?
Cameras often store the picture in sensor orientation and add an EXIF tag that tells viewers how to turn it. Some programs and websites ignore that tag. Current browsers apply it when opening the photo, and this tool saves the pixels already turned, without the tag, so the image looks the same in every program.
Is rotating a JPG lossless?
Not with this tool. The image is rotated in the browser and then saved as a new JPG, which compresses it again. Use a high quality setting (90–95) to keep the loss minimal, or save as PNG if the image must not change at all.
What is the difference between flipping and rotating?
Rotating turns the whole picture around its centre, like turning a printed photo on a table. Flipping mirrors it, like looking at it in a mirror: text becomes reversed. Flipping both horizontally and vertically gives the same result as rotating by 180°.
Can I rotate by 45 degrees or straighten a crooked photo?
No. The tool only rotates in 90° steps, which keep every pixel intact and need no cropping or background filling.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The image is rotated and saved by your browser on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.
