About the Add Page Numbers to PDF
Add Page Numbers puts a number on every page of a PDF – or only on the pages you choose. Pick one of six positions, a style such as “Page 1 of 12”, the size and colour, and the number to start with. A preview shows where the number will appear before you save.
The numbers are added as real PDF text with pdf-lib, directly in your browser, so they stay sharp at any zoom level and the original pages are not re-compressed. Your file is not uploaded.
How to use it
- Click “Choose a PDF file” or drag a PDF onto the box.
- Choose the position, for example “Bottom centre”, and the style: 1, 1 / N, Page 1 or Page 1 of N.
- To skip the cover, choose “Custom” under Pages and type 2-. Set “Start at” to the number the first numbered page should get.
- Adjust the font size, colour and margin, and check the preview.
- Click “Add page numbers” and download the numbered PDF.
Features
- Six positions: Top or bottom, left, centre or right – on every page, whatever its size.
- Four styles: Plain numbers, “1 / 12”, “Page 1” or “Page 1 of 12”, where 12 is the last number printed.
- Skip pages and choose the start: Leave out a cover or table of contents and start the count at any number from 1 to 9,999.
- Correct on rotated pages: Numbers sit upright in the chosen corner of each page as it is displayed, including scanned pages that are rotated.
- Sharp and searchable: Numbers are real text in the Helvetica font, not images.
Examples
A report with a cover page
Choose “Custom”, type 2-, keep “Start at” at 1 and the style “Page 1 of N”: the cover stays clean and the next page reads “Page 1 of 11”.
Continuing a numbered document
A second volume should continue where the first ended. Set “Start at” to 121 and the numbers run from 121 onwards.
Merged documents for a meeting
After combining several PDFs with Merge PDF, add numbers at the bottom right so everyone can refer to the same page.
Limitations and notes
- Numbers use the Helvetica font and Arabic numerals; other fonts and Roman numerals are not available.
- Existing page numbers in the document are not removed or replaced – choose a position where there is free space.
- Adding numbers to a PDF that contains a digital signature invalidates that signature. The tool warns you when it finds one.
- Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The numbers are added by JavaScript in your browser and the new PDF is created on your device.
What does N mean in “Page 1 of N”?
N is the last number that is printed. If you number pages 2 to 12 starting at 1, the numbers run from “Page 1 of 11” to “Page 11 of 11”.
Can I leave out the first page?
Yes. Choose “Custom” under Pages and type 2- (page 2 to the end). Use “Start at” to choose the number that page gets.
Does the rest of the PDF change?
No. Text, images, links and form fields are kept. Only the numbers are added on top of the pages, and the document information such as the title stays the same.
