About the Add Watermark to PDF
Add Watermark to PDF stamps a word such as “CONFIDENTIAL” or “DRAFT”, or your logo, across the pages of a PDF. Choose the size, transparency and angle, place one copy in the centre or repeat it over the whole page, and check the result in the preview before saving.
Text can be in any language your device can display, including Korean, Japanese and Arabic, because the browser draws it as an image. The PDF is processed in your browser with pdf-lib and is not uploaded.
How to use it
- Click “Choose a PDF file” or drag a PDF onto the box.
- Choose Text and type the watermark, or choose Image and select a logo (PNG with a transparent background works best).
- Set the size, opacity and angle, and choose “Centre” for one copy or “Tile” to repeat it across the page.
- To watermark only some pages, choose “Custom” under Pages and type them, for example 2-5.
- Check the preview, click “Add watermark” and download the PDF.
Features
- Text or logo: Type any text in the colour you want, or use an image such as a company logo or a stamp.
- Any language: Watermark text is drawn by your browser, so every script your device can show works – no font download needed.
- Centred or tiled: Place one large copy in the middle of each page, or repeat it in a grid that covers the page.
- Size, opacity and angle: Make the watermark subtle or bold, and run it straight, diagonally or vertically.
- Small files: The watermark image is stored once in the PDF and reused on every page, so the file barely grows.
Examples
Marking a draft
Type DRAFT, keep the 45° angle and 30% opacity, and send colleagues a version nobody will mistake for the final one.
Branding a price list
Choose Image, select your logo, set the size to 20% and tile it lightly across every page.
Sharing a document copy
Before sending a copy of a contract, tile “COPY – for review only” at 15% opacity so the text underneath stays readable.
Limitations and notes
- A watermark is not a security feature: PDF editors can remove or cover it.
- Text is added as an image, so the watermark text cannot be searched or copied.
- Text uses your device’s standard bold font, so the exact letter shapes can differ slightly between devices.
- The watermark is placed on top of the page content, semi-transparent. Putting it behind the content is not offered, because scanned pages would hide it completely.
- Adding a watermark to a PDF that contains a digital signature invalidates that signature. The tool warns you when it finds one.
- Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The watermark is created and added by JavaScript in your browser; the new PDF is saved directly from your device.
Can the watermark be removed?
With a PDF editor, yes – like any image on a page. A watermark discourages misuse and shows a document’s status, but it does not protect the content.
Which image works best as a logo watermark?
A PNG with a transparent background. Photos and JPG files work too, but their rectangle is visible on the page.
Will the text underneath still be readable?
Yes, at the default 30% opacity. For dense pages choose 10–20%; for a bold stamp such as VOID use 60% or more.
