About the QR Code Reader
Sometimes the QR code you need to read is already on your screen – in an e-mail, a PDF, a chat message or a screenshot – and pointing a phone at your own monitor is awkward. This tool reads QR codes from image files and pasted screenshots instead.
The image is decoded in your browser with the open-source jsQR library and never uploaded. Links are not opened automatically: the tool shows you the destination domain first, so you can spot a suspicious address before you visit it. Wi-Fi codes are split into network name, security type and password.
How to use it
- Click "Choose an image" or drag an image file onto the box. You can also copy a screenshot and press Ctrl+V (⌘+V on a Mac) on this page.
- Wait a moment while the image is scanned.
- Read the decoded text and copy it with the Copy button.
- For a link, check the domain shown under "Link to" before clicking "Open link". For a Wi-Fi code, copy the password or type it into your device.
- Click Clear to read another image.
Features
- Images and screenshots: Reads PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and BMP files up to 25 MB, and screenshots pasted from the clipboard.
- Safe link preview: Only http and https links get an Open button, and the domain is shown prominently so you know where the link leads.
- Wi-Fi details: Wi-Fi QR codes are split into network name, security type, password and hidden-network flag.
- Robust scanning: Large photos are scanned at several sizes, and light-on-dark and transparent QR codes are supported.
- No camera, no upload: The tool never asks for camera access, and the image stays on your device.
Examples
A QR code in an e-mail

Joining a guest Wi-Fi
Photograph the Wi-Fi card, open the photo here and copy the password shown under "Password" to your laptop.
Checking a code before printing
Download a code from the QR Code Generator and read it back here to confirm that it contains exactly what you intended.
Limitations and notes
- Only one QR code per image is read. Crop the image if it contains several codes.
- Very blurry, tiny, strongly distorted or partly hidden codes may not be found.
- Other barcode types (EAN, Code 128, Data Matrix and so on) are not supported.
- The tool reads image files; it does not use your camera.
Frequently asked questions
Is my image uploaded?
No. The image is opened and decoded by JavaScript in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
Is it safe to open the link from a QR code?
QR codes are a common way to hide phishing links. Check that the domain shown under "Link to" is the one you expect – look out for misspellings or extra words – before clicking "Open link".
Why was no QR code found?
The code may be too small, blurred, cut off or one of several codes in the image. Try a sharper photo, crop the image around a single code or take a larger screenshot.
Can I scan a QR code with my webcam?
Not with this tool. Take a photo or screenshot of the code and open the image file instead.
