About the Video Frame Capture

Video Frame Capture saves single frames of a video as images – a sharp still for a thumbnail, the decisive moment of a match, or a slide from a recorded presentation. You step to the exact frame you want and save it at the full size of the video.

The video is decoded by your browser. Nothing is uploaded, so you can use it with private recordings and large files.

How to use it

  1. Click "Choose a video" or drag an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file onto the box.
  2. Find the scene with Play, the timeline, the frame buttons or by typing a time. On the timeline, the arrow keys move one frame.
  3. Choose JPG, PNG or WebP and click "Capture frame". Repeat for every frame you want.
  4. Download frames one by one, or click "Download all (ZIP)".

Features

  • Frame by frame: Move exactly one frame forwards or backwards, even in phone videos with a changing frame rate.
  • Full resolution: Each frame is decoded at the full size of the video and turned upright when the video is rotated.
  • Collect several frames: Capture up to 50 frames, check them in the list and download them together as a ZIP.
  • JPG, PNG or WebP: Pick a small JPG or WebP with adjustable quality, or a lossless PNG.
  • Private: The video never leaves your device. The images contain no metadata such as the recording location.

Examples

A thumbnail for your video

Step through the opening seconds, capture three candidate frames and pick the sharpest one for the upload.

The moment that matters

Save the frame where the ball crosses the line, or the slide that was only shown for a second in a recorded talk.

Limitations and notes

  • It needs a browser that can decode video with WebCodecs: a recent Chrome or Edge, Safari 16.4 or later, or Firefox 130 or later.
  • HDR videos, for example from recent iPhones, are converted to standard colours, so the image may look a little different from the video.
  • Transparency in a video is not kept.
  • Up to 50 frames can be captured at a time. The images contain no metadata.
  • MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV files up to 4 GB are supported. Some browsers cannot decode some formats, such as HEVC (H.265).

Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is read and decoded by your browser, and the images are created on your device.

Is the image as sharp as the video?

Yes. The frame is decoded at the full size of the video. PNG keeps every pixel; JPG and WebP compress the image at the quality you choose.

Is the saved frame the one I see?

Yes. The tool works out exactly which frame is on screen and decodes that frame, even when the video is paused between two frames.

Does it work with iPhone videos?

Yes, if your browser can decode HEVC (H.265), as Safari and Chrome on most recent computers can. Otherwise the tool tells you that it cannot decode the video.
