About the Video Trimmer
Video Trimmer cuts out the part of a video you want to keep – the goal in a long phone recording, a single answer in a recorded meeting, or a clip without the minutes of setup at the start. It works with MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV files.
The video is read and cut by your browser. Nothing is uploaded, so large recordings are not limited by your upload speed and private videos never leave your device.
How to use it
- Click "Choose a video" or drag an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file onto the box.
- Find the start of the part you want, using Play, the timeline or the frame buttons, and click "Set start". Do the same for the end and click "Set end". You can also drag the two handles under the timeline or type the times.
- Click "Play selection" to check the part, then choose Fast or Precise.
- Click "Cut video" and then "Download".
Features
- Fast and lossless: Fast copies the video as it is, without re-encoding, so the quality stays exactly the same and even long clips are ready in seconds.
- Frame-accurate when it matters: Precise re-encodes the clip so it starts exactly on the frame you chose.
- Step frame by frame: Move one frame at a time with the buttons or the arrow keys to find the exact start and end.
- Same format as the original: An MP4 stays an MP4, a MOV stays a MOV. The video is not converted to another format.
- Private: The video is processed on your device. Nothing is uploaded or stored.
Examples
Sharing a moment from a long recording
Cut the 20 seconds with the goal out of a 10-minute phone video and send just that clip.
Removing the start and end of a screen recording
Trim the seconds where you start and stop the recording, so the video begins with the first useful frame.
Limitations and notes
- Fast can only start a clip on a keyframe, so the clip may start a little before your start point – the tool shows where before you cut. Videos with B-frames may also get a few extra frames at the end. Use Precise for an exact start.
- Precise re-encodes the video, which takes longer and may slightly lower the quality. It needs a browser that can encode video (WebCodecs); in some browsers the sound cannot be re-encoded and the clip has no sound.
- Only the main video and sound tracks are kept. Subtitles, extra audio tracks, chapters and metadata such as the recording date and location are not copied.
- MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV files up to 4 GB are supported, and a clip can be up to about 1 GB. AVI and other formats are not supported.
- Some browsers cannot show some formats, such as HEVC (H.265) videos from iPhones. The video is then shown frame by frame, or cannot be previewed at all.
Frequently asked questions
Is my video uploaded?
No. The video is read, cut and saved by JavaScript in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
Why does the clip start a little earlier than I chose?
Most of a video only stores changes from earlier frames. A fast cut without re-encoding has to start on a keyframe, a complete picture, and keyframes are often one or two seconds apart. Choose Precise to start exactly on your frame.
Does cutting reduce the quality?
Fast does not: the frames are copied unchanged. Precise re-encodes the video at about the original bitrate, which can lose a little quality.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in a recent browser. Very long videos need a lot of memory, so a computer is more reliable for big files.
Can I cut iPhone videos (HEVC)?
Yes. Fast cuts work in every browser. To preview and to use Precise, the browser has to support HEVC, as Safari and Chrome on most recent computers do.
