About the Video Compressor
The video compressor makes video files smaller so they fit into an e-mail, a chat message or an upload limit. It re-encodes the video as an MP4 with H.264 picture and AAC sound, the format that plays almost everywhere.
Choose a quality preset, or enter a target size such as 25 MB and let the tool work out the bitrate. You can also lower the resolution to 1080p, 720p or 480p and remove the sound for an even smaller file.
The whole compression runs in your browser with WebCodecs. Your video is not uploaded, which keeps private recordings private and avoids waiting for a large upload.
How to use it
- Choose a video (MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV, up to 4 GB) or drop it on the page.
- Choose Quality and pick Smaller file, Balanced or Better quality – or choose Target size and enter the size in MB.
- Optionally lower the maximum resolution and choose whether to keep the sound.
- Press Compress video and wait for the progress bar; you can cancel at any time.
- Compare the original and compressed sizes, play the result and press Download.
Features
- Quality presets: Three presets that set the bitrate from the resolution: a smaller file, a balanced result or better quality.
- Target file size: Enter a size in megabytes and the video bitrate is calculated from the length, leaving room for the sound.
- Lower resolution: Scale down to 1080p, 720p or 480p, keeping the shape of portrait and landscape videos.
- Remove the sound: Leave out the sound track to save space when you only need the picture.
- Before and after: See the original and compressed sizes and how much you saved before you download.
Examples
Send by e-mail
Set a target size of 20 MB to attach a short phone video to an e-mail.
Chat apps with limits
Compress a 4K clip to 720p with the Balanced preset so it uploads quickly.
Screen recordings
Choose Smaller file and remove the sound for a silent screen capture.
Limitations and notes
- Your browser must be able to decode the video and encode H.264 (WebCodecs): a recent Chrome or Edge, Safari 16.4 or later, or Firefox 130 or later.
- Compression re-encodes the video, so some quality is lost; a smaller target means a softer picture.
- A target size is approximate; the result usually lands a little below it. Very small targets for long videos are not possible.
- Long or high-resolution videos take time and memory, and the result is held in memory until you download it.
- Subtitles, chapters and the recording date and location of the original are not copied.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress a video to 25 MB?
Choose Target size, enter 25 and press Compress video. Removing the sound or lowering the resolution helps for long videos.
Will the video lose quality?
Some, because it is encoded again. Better quality keeps more detail; Smaller file saves the most space.
Why is my compressed video larger?
The original was already strongly compressed. Choose Smaller file, a lower resolution or a target size below the original size.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The video is compressed in your browser and saved straight to your device.
Which format does it save?
An MP4 file with H.264 video and AAC sound, which plays on phones, computers and most websites.
