About Images to GIF

Images to GIF turns a few photos, screenshots or drawings into an animated GIF that plays on any website, chat app or e-mail. Put the pictures in the order you want, choose how long each one shows, and download the GIF.

The GIF takes the shape of the first picture. Pictures of another shape are fitted inside with a background colour around them, or fill the frame and are cropped. Choose the size, and whether the GIF plays over and over or once.

Everything happens in your browser: the pictures are never uploaded, and only one of them is in memory at a time while the GIF is made.

How to use it

  1. Choose 2 to 100 pictures: JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP or AVIF.
  2. Drag them, or use the arrow buttons, to put them in order.
  3. Choose the size, how pictures of another shape fit, and the time per picture; give a picture its own time in the list if it should stay longer.
  4. Choose whether the GIF plays over and over or once, and press Make GIF.
  5. Watch the GIF and download it.

Features

  • Any order: Drag pictures or use the arrow buttons; the GIF follows the list from top to bottom.
  • Time per picture: One time for all pictures, from 0.02 to 10 seconds, and a different one for any picture that needs it.
  • Fit or fill: Keep each whole picture with a background around it, or fill the frame and crop the edges.
  • Loop or play once: Make a GIF that repeats forever, or one that stops on the last picture.
  • Private: The GIF is made in your browser; the pictures never leave your device.

Examples

A before and after

Two photos, 1 second each, looping: a simple comparison for a chat or a forum post.

Steps of a tutorial

Five screenshots at 480 px, 2 seconds each, so readers can follow every step.

A flip-book drawing

Twenty drawings at 0.1 seconds each make a short animation.

Limitations and notes

  • A GIF has at most 256 colours per picture, so photos can look grainy or banded; drawings and screenshots look best.
  • GIF stores times in hundredths of a second, so 0.125 seconds becomes 0.13.
  • Transparent pictures get the background colour: the GIF has no see-through parts.
  • From an animated GIF or WebP, only the first frame is used. To turn a video into a GIF, use Video to GIF.
  • GIF files get large quickly. For long or big animations, a smaller size keeps the file small.

Frequently asked questions

How long should each picture show?

Half a second (the default) suits a quick slideshow; 1 to 3 seconds gives time to read a screenshot. Very short times like 0.05 seconds make a flip-book animation.

Why does my GIF look grainy?

GIF can only use 256 colours in each picture, so smooth colour changes in photos are reduced. Drawings, logos and screenshots with few colours look sharp.

Why is my GIF so large?

Every picture is stored in full. Choose a smaller size, or fewer pictures, to make the file smaller.

What happens to pictures of different shapes?

The GIF takes the shape of the first picture. Others are either fitted inside with the background colour around them, or fill the frame and are cropped at the edges.

Are my pictures uploaded?

No. The GIF is made in your browser, and the pictures never leave your device.
