About the Video to GIF

Video to GIF turns a moment of a video into an animated GIF that plays everywhere: in chats, e-mails, documents, forums and slides, without a play button. Pick the part, the width and the frame rate, and the GIF loops forever.

Choose up to 30 seconds with the slider or by typing the times, a width from 240 to 640 pixels and 5, 10 or 15 frames per second. Portrait phone videos stay upright and keep their shape.

The GIF is made in your browser with WebCodecs. Your video is not uploaded, so private clips stay on your device.

How to use it

  1. Choose a video (MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV, up to 4 GB) or drop it on the page.
  2. Set the start and end with the slider or type the times, for example 1:23.5.
  3. Choose the width and the frames per second.
  4. Press Make GIF and wait for the progress bar; you can cancel at any time.
  5. Watch the GIF, check its size and press Download.

Features

  • Up to 30 seconds: Pick any part of the video with a slider and exact time fields.
  • Width and frame rate: 240, 320, 480 or 640 pixels wide at 5, 10 or 15 frames per second.
  • Upright portrait videos: Phone videos are turned the way they are shown and keep their shape.
  • Loops forever: The GIF plays again and again, like the GIFs people expect.
  • Private: Made in your browser; nothing is uploaded and no account is needed.

Examples

Reaction GIF

Three seconds of a clip at 320 px and 10 fps make a small GIF for a chat.

Product demo

Ten seconds of a screen recording at 640 px and 15 fps for a README or a help page.

Slide animation

A short loop at 480 px to put into a presentation.

Limitations and notes

  • Your browser must be able to decode the video (WebCodecs): a recent Chrome or Edge, Safari 16.4 or later, or Firefox 130 or later.
  • A GIF has at most 256 colours per frame, so gradients and dark scenes can look banded.
  • GIFs are much larger than videos: long parts, wide sizes and high frame rates make big files.
  • GIFs have no sound.

Frequently asked questions

How long can the GIF be?

Up to 30 seconds. Shorter parts make smaller files that load faster.

How do I make the GIF smaller?

Choose a shorter part, a smaller width or fewer frames per second.

Why does my GIF look grainy?

Each frame can use only 256 colours. Scenes with few colours, such as screen recordings, look best.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The GIF is made in your browser and saved straight to your device.

Can I make a GIF from a phone video?

Yes. MP4 and MOV videos from phones work, and portrait videos stay upright.
