About the Stopwatch
This online stopwatch measures elapsed time to the hundredth of a second. Start it, record as many laps as you need, pause and resume, and reset when you are done. The display switches to hours automatically once an hour has passed.
Each lap shows the time of that lap alone and the total time when it was recorded, and the fastest and slowest laps are labelled. When you are finished, copy the laps into a spreadsheet or a message, or download them as a CSV file.
The stopwatch runs entirely in your browser. It measures time from the moment you press Start using your device clock, so a slow screen update or a tab in the background never makes it lose time.
How to use it
- Press Start (or the Space bar) to begin timing.
- Press Lap (or L) each time a lap, round or split ends. The newest lap appears at the top of the table, with the lap still running above it.
- Press Pause to stop the clock and Resume to continue from the same time.
- Use Copy laps or Download CSV to keep the results.
- Press Reset (or R) while paused to clear the time and the laps.
- Use Full screen to show large digits, for example on a projector or a phone on the table.
Features
- Laps and split times: Every lap records its own time and the running total, so you can see both the pace of each round and the time since the start.
- Fastest and slowest lap: With two or more laps the quickest and slowest are labelled in words as well as colour.
- Copy or save as CSV: Copy the laps as tab-separated text that pastes neatly into a spreadsheet, or save a CSV file that keeps your language’s decimal separator intact.
- Keyboard shortcuts: Space starts and pauses, L records a lap and R resets, so you can time without looking at the mouse.
- Full screen and screen wake: Show the time in very large digits, and keep a phone screen from turning off while the stopwatch runs (in browsers that support it).
Examples
Running laps
Press Lap at the end of each lap around a track to see your lap times and which lap was your fastest.
Presentation rehearsal
Time each section of a talk with a lap per slide group, then copy the laps into your notes.
Lab or kitchen timing
Measure how long a reaction, a brew or a bake takes, with laps marking each step.
Limitations and notes
- The stopwatch stops and its laps are lost when you close or reload the tab, or move to another page of this site. Nothing is saved.
- The display shows hundredths of a second. The accuracy depends on your device clock and on when you press the button.
- The table shows the newest 100 laps, and the stopwatch keeps up to 999 laps. Copy or download the laps to get all of them.
- Full screen is not available for web pages on iPhone. Keeping the screen on needs a browser with the Screen Wake Lock API.
Frequently asked questions
Does the stopwatch keep running in a background tab?
Yes. The time is calculated from the moment you pressed Start, so it is correct when you come back, even if the browser updated the page less often in the meantime.
What is the difference between lap time and total?
Lap time is how long that lap took on its own. Total is the time from the start until the lap was recorded, also called the split time.
How do I get my laps into Excel or Google Sheets?
Press Copy laps and paste into the sheet: the columns are separated by tabs. Or press Download CSV and open the file.
Can I use the stopwatch on my phone?
Yes. Tick "Keep the screen on" if your browser offers it, so the screen does not turn off while timing.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. The stopwatch runs in your browser and your times are never uploaded. When analytics is on, pressing Start is counted as a use of the tool, without any times (see the privacy policy).
