About the Pomodoro Timer
The Pomodoro Technique breaks work into focused sessions separated by short breaks: traditionally 25 minutes of focus, a 5-minute break, and a longer break after every four focus sessions. This timer runs that cycle for you and rings at the end of each session.
By default the next session starts by itself, so you can keep working without touching the timer. You can skip a session, pause, or reset the whole set, and change every length: focus, short break, long break and how many focus sessions come before the long break.
The timer runs in your browser. The alarms for the coming sessions are set on the audio clock in advance, so they ring on time even when the tab is in the background on a computer.
How to use it
- Press Start (or the Space bar) to begin the first 25-minute focus session.
- Work until the alarm rings. A short break starts by itself; after the fourth focus session a long break follows.
- Use Pause and Resume if you are interrupted, or Skip to move on to the next session early.
- Open Settings to change the lengths, the number of focus sessions before a long break, the alarm sound, or to turn off the automatic start.
- Press Reset (or R) to go back to the first focus session and clear the count.
Features
- The full Pomodoro cycle: Focus, short break, focus … and a long break after the last focus session of the set, with the session number and dots showing where you are.
- Automatic start: Each session starts the moment the previous one ends, so the schedule never drifts. Turn it off to start each session yourself.
- Your own lengths: Set focus and breaks from 1 to 120 minutes and the long break after 2 to 10 focus sessions. Changes made while a session runs apply from the next one.
- Alarm, tab title and full screen: Hear a beep, bell or chime at the end of each session, see the time left in the browser tab, and show large digits in full screen.
- Count of focus sessions: See how many focus sessions you have completed since you opened the page. Skipped sessions are not counted.
Examples
Study session
Run four 25-minute focus sessions with 5-minute breaks, then take the 15-minute long break before the next set.
Longer deep work
Set focus to 50 minutes and the short break to 10 for longer stretches of writing or programming.
Short tasks
Use 15-minute focus sessions with 3-minute breaks to get through email or chores.
Limitations and notes
- The timer and the count stop when you close or reload the tab or move to another page of this site; nothing is saved.
- On phones the alarm may not ring while the screen is off or the browser is in the background. Keep the page open with "Keep the screen on".
- On iPhone the silent switch also mutes the alarm.
- The timer does not send notifications and does not block websites.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Pomodoro Technique?
A time-management method by Francesco Cirillo: work on one task for a fixed session (a "pomodoro", usually 25 minutes), take a short break, and take a longer break after four sessions.
Can I change the 25-minute length?
Yes. Open Settings and set focus, short break and long break to any whole number of minutes from 1 to 120.
What happens if I change a setting while the timer runs?
The current session keeps its length; the new lengths apply from the next session.
Does the timer keep going in a background tab?
Yes. Sessions are timed from their exact start, and when you come back the timer is in the right session even if several ended while you were away.
Does Skip count as a completed session?
No. Only focus sessions that run to the end are counted.
