About the Team Generator

The Team Generator splits a list of names into random teams. Paste the names, choose how many teams you want or how many people each team should have, and press Make teams. Use it for class groups, five-a-side football, quiz nights or project groups at work.

The teams are always as even as possible: their sizes differ by at most one person, and when the people do not divide evenly, the larger teams are chosen at random, so the first team is not always the bigger one. The draw uses your browser’s secure random number generator.

You can also name captains. Each captain goes to a different team first, and the others are shared out after them. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste the names, one person per line. Empty lines are skipped.
  2. Choose "Number of teams" or "People per team" and enter the number.
  3. To give each team a leader, tick "Put captains on different teams first" and type the captains, one per line.
  4. Press Make teams. Press Shuffle again for a new draw with the same names.
  5. Press "Copy all teams" to copy the teams as text, one team per line.

Features

  • Even teams: Team sizes differ by at most one person, and the larger teams are picked at random.
  • Teams or team size: Ask for a number of teams, or for a number of people per team and get as many teams as needed.
  • Captains first: Captains are placed on different teams before everyone else is shared out.
  • Fair draw: Every arrangement is equally likely, drawn with your browser’s secure random number generator.
  • Private: The teams are made in your browser. Your list is not uploaded or stored.

Examples

Class groups

A teacher pastes 28 names and asks for 7 teams of 4.

A football match

Ten players and two captains: tick captains, ask for 2 teams and each side gets a captain and five players.

Quiz night

Ask for teams of 3 with 14 people: you get 5 teams, four of 3 and one of 2.

Limitations and notes

  • Teams are random; there is no balancing by skill, age or anything else.
  • You cannot keep two people apart or together.
  • Up to 10,000 names and 100 teams.
  • The teams are not saved: making teams again or reloading the page gives a new draw.

Frequently asked questions

Is the split fair?

Yes. The names are shuffled with your browser’s secure random number generator, so every arrangement is equally likely, and team sizes differ by at most one.

What happens when the names do not divide evenly?

Some teams get one more person. Which teams those are is drawn at random, so it is not always the first teams.

How do captains work?

Each captain goes to a different team first; the others are then shared out at random. There cannot be more captains than teams.

A captain is also on my list of names. Is that person counted twice?

No. A captain whose name is also on the list counts once, as the captain.

Is my list sent anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded or stored.
