About the VAT Calculator

The VAT calculator adds value added tax to a net price, or takes it out of a price that already includes it. It shows the net price, the VAT and the gross price together, so you can copy whichever one an invoice, a quote or a price tag needs.

Choose a country to start from its standard rate, or pick one of its reduced rates with a single tap. The rates of the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Japan and Korea are built in; for any other country, enter the rate and choose the currency.

Amounts are rounded to the smallest unit of the currency, and you choose how: to the nearest, down or up. Net price and VAT always add up to the gross price exactly. Everything is calculated in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Choose "Add VAT" for a price without VAT, or "Remove VAT" for a price that already includes it.
  2. Enter the price.
  3. Choose the country, then the standard rate or a reduced one; you can also type any rate.
  4. Choose how the VAT is rounded if your invoices round in a particular way.
  5. Copy the net price, the VAT or the gross price.

Features

  • Both directions: Add VAT to a net price, or find the net price and the VAT inside a gross price.
  • Country rates: Standard and reduced rates of seven countries as of 1 November 2026, with what each reduced rate is for.
  • Exact amounts: Amounts are worked out in whole cents (or won and yen), so net + VAT always equals gross, even for very large amounts.
  • Your rounding: Round the VAT to the nearest unit, down or up, as your accounting does.
  • Private: Nothing you type is sent anywhere or saved.

Examples

Invoice in the UK

A net price of £19.99 at 20% VAT is £4.00 of VAT and £23.99 in total.

Price in Germany

A gross price of 119.00 € includes 19.00 € of VAT at 19%; the net price is 100.00 €.

Food in Japan

A price of 1,980 yen with 8% consumption tax is 1,833 yen before tax and 147 yen of tax.

Limitations and notes

  • The rates are those of 1 November 2026. Rates change, and which rate applies to which goods is set by each country: check with your tax office.
  • Portugal’s rates are those of the mainland; the Azores and Madeira have lower rates.
  • US sales tax is not VAT: it is set by each state and city and added at the till. You can still enter your sales tax rate with "Other" and use "Add VAT" to work out the total.
  • It works out one price at a time; it does not add up the lines of an invoice.

Frequently asked questions

How do I take VAT out of a price?

Choose "Remove VAT" and enter the price with VAT. The net price is the gross price divided by 1 plus the rate (for 20%: divided by 1.2), and the VAT is the difference.

Why not just take 20% off the gross price?

Because the VAT is 20% of the net price, not of the gross one. 20% of £120 is £24, but the VAT inside £120 is £20.

Which rounding should I use?

Most invoices round to the nearest cent. In Japan and Korea, rounding the tax down is common. Use the one your accounting or your country’s rules ask for.

Is US sales tax the same as VAT?

No. Sales tax is charged once, at the sale to the final customer, at a rate set by the state and the city. VAT is charged at every step and is included in shop prices in most countries.

Is what I type saved?

No. The calculation happens in your browser, and nothing is stored or sent.
