About Crop Video
Crop Video cuts the edges off a video so only the part you want is left. Turn a wide video into an upright 9:16 clip for Shorts, Reels or TikTok, make a square for a feed, or remove a black border or something you do not want to show.
Choose a shape, then move the box over the picture: it is drawn over a frame of the video, and you can pick another frame to check that nothing important leaves the box. The new video keeps the size of the box, its length and its sound.
Everything happens in your browser with WebCodecs. The video is never uploaded, so even long or private recordings stay on your device.
How to use it
- Choose a video file: MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV, up to 4 GB.
- Choose a shape — 9:16, 1:1, 4:5, 16:9 or free — and move or resize the box over the frame.
- Pick other frames with the slider to check that the box fits the whole video.
- Press Crop video and wait for the progress bar. You can cancel at any time.
- Watch the result and download it.
Features
- Common shapes: 9:16 for Shorts, Reels and stories, 1:1 for square posts, 4:5 for feeds and 16:9 for YouTube, or any box you like.
- Sound kept: The sound is copied as it is when the format allows, so it keeps its quality and stays in sync.
- Phone videos the right way up: The box is drawn on the picture as it is shown, even when a phone recorded the video turned.
- Same format: An MP4 stays an MP4, a MOV stays a MOV: the cropped video opens wherever the original did.
- Private: Cropping runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
Examples
Landscape to Shorts
Crop a 1920 × 1080 video to the centre 608 × 1080 for an upright 9:16 clip.
Square for a feed
Crop a phone video to 1080 × 1080 for a square post.
Remove black bars
Use a free box to cut black bars or a watermark corner off the picture.
Limitations and notes
- Cropping always encodes the picture again, which takes about as long as the video plays (longer on slower devices) and loses a very little quality.
- The new video keeps the size of the box; it is not enlarged. A small box from a small video gives a small video.
- Only the main video and sound tracks are kept. Subtitles, chapters and other sound tracks are left out.
- Encoding needs WebCodecs (Chrome, Edge and Safari 16.4 or newer; Firefox 130 or newer). If the browser cannot read or make the sound, the video is saved without sound and the page says so first.
- Video sizes are kept even, so the box may lose one pixel on its right or bottom edge.
Frequently asked questions
How do I crop a video to 9:16 for Shorts or Reels?
Choose 9:16: the box starts as the largest upright part in the middle of the picture. Move it to the part you want and press Crop video.
Does cropping lose quality?
Very slightly: the picture has to be encoded again. The bitrate is kept close to the original for the part you keep, and the sound is copied as it is when it can be.
Can I crop and shorten the video at the same time?
Not in one step. Crop it here, then shorten it with Video Trimmer (or the other way round).
Why is the box a pixel smaller than I set?
Video encoders need even widths and heights, so an odd size loses one pixel.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Cropping runs in your browser and the video never leaves your device.
